1000 km road trip in Kia EV6: How much I spent charging the car

1000 km road trip in Kia EV6: How much I spent charging the car BHPian shankar.balan recently shared this with other enthusiasts: Let me add a little more information regarding this trip’s charging action and cost. I drove the EV6 quite aggressively and without any ‘babying’ and ‘hypermiling’ and all that, for approx 1000 kms, over the last 6 days. I charged the car twice at the higher powered 120KW Zeon charger at Mysore. The first time, as soon as I reached Bangalore, I took 24.9KWH and paid 790/- and then as soon as I returned from Coorg, I took 38.4 KWH and paid 1128/- so as to be prepared for the drive to Ooty. After reaching Ooty, I then charged at the Tata Power 50KW EZ Charger at Savoy Ooty, taking 47.7 KWH and paying 1002/-. And then again, so as to be prepared for my return trip, I charged there again, taking 25.1KWH and paying 529/-. In all, for the 1000kms driven, I’ve spent 3449/-. Add another 600/approx for Home Charging before leaving and after coming back and let us reasonably assume 4000/-. Cost Per km comes to around Rs 4/-. By contrast, a petrol vehicle returning around 10kmpl would have cost me 100 litres of petrol and I’d have spent approx 11000/- odd on that. Basis the above facts, one can safely say that even if one uses public charging at the higher powered fast chargers, the general cost of running an EV is extremely economical. The powerful AWD long range EV thus becomes an ideal ‘loafer-mobile’ in my view. My Kona might have been a little more efficient and economical on this trip. I will attribute this to the FWD Kona vs the AWD Kia EV6. I think over time, even I might be able to learn to drive my EV more efficiently, but the real question is, why would I even bother to compromise the phenomenal feeling of that neck snapping power surge and the G forces and my ‘make-believe’ of being a ‘jet fighter pilot’? That feeling is pretty priceless and hence not really worth sacrificing on the altar of ‘Economy’. Long story short, EVs are definitely wonderful companions for these long journeys, especially here in Southern India. I am glad to have become a ‘convert’.
