Windscreen on a 300 to 400 cc motorcycle – important or not? After many trials, I feel the windscreen on a motorcycle is highly over-rated topic. Unless ofcourse we are talking about aerodynamics around super sport bikes with highly aggressive chin-on-tank riding position.Why I Feel Motorcycle Windscreen topic is over-rated?For the mid-segment motorcycles under 300-400 cc, the windscreen size is not really a big deal. Upto around 100-110 kmph, the difference between a tall and short windscreen is negligible. The average riding speed is reducing by the day. Cities are getting crowded. Even on highways, with so much ambient traffic these days, restricted two wheeler entries on many expressways, speed regulations etc, It is difficult to sustain higher speeds for long durations. On an adventure bike, the rider’s geometry is upright. For the wind to completely flow over the helmet, the height of the screen will have to be obnoxiously tall which is not feasible and will affect the dynamics and drag. By adding an acceptable taller windshied, all we end up doing is shift the position of the windblast. With a short windscreen, the blast is spread around a larger area and with a taller screen the blast is channeled towards the helmet which actually stresses the neck more adding to fatigue and increasing wind noise. On my Interceptor, I tried the short fly screen, tall fly screen, carbon racing windscreen and carbon racing in combination with pro-spec. I also tried a custom made taller windscreen in 4mm PC. By the end of all these trials, I realised that the shortest windscreen worked the best by distrubuting wind blast over a large area and with least buffeting noise. What helps greatly is a good pair of ear plugs. One will have to experiment and findout a comfortable type, I use no-noise and am happy.Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.
