Guntur teenaged girl’s drug addiction pushes mother to suicide bid

Vijayawada: A series of disturbing revelations has brought the spotlight back on the drug menace in Guntur, after police uncovered a racket allegedly involving students, including minors, and the circulation of explicit videos to blackmail victims.According to officials, an intermediate girl aged 16 was found addicted to drugs, prompting an investigation by the EAGLE (Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement) teams. The case came to light after the girl’s parents noticed suspicious videos on her mobile phone, showing boys consuming drugs and the girl present in the same room, with indications of close intimacy. Police suspect the use of synthetic drugs.EAGLE Chief Ake Ravi Krishna told TOI that the girl had exhibited aggressive behaviour at home, repeatedly clashing with her parents. The family later realised that she was allegedly being trapped by a group of students who not only consumed drugs but also lured girls into addiction. Investigators are examining whether the girl was blackmailed using videos recorded while she was under the influence of drugs. The situation escalated into a family tragedy when the girl’s mother, a 43-year-old woman, allegedly attempted suicide by consuming around 50 tablets, unable to cope with her daughter’s behaviour and the mounting pressure. She consumed the tablets that she used for her fits or seizures medication. She survived and is undergoing treatment.Police have registered a case at the Old Guntur police station and initiated a detailed background check to trace the source of the drugs, the supply chain, and the role of those involved in exploiting and intimidating minors.Guntur SP Vakul Jindal said strict action would be taken against all those found responsible, including suppliers and intermediaries.EAGLE teams have begun interacting with the victim’s family and intensifying surveillance, as repeated drug-related incidents continue to cause concern in the district. Authorities are also probing how drugs are reaching students despite heightened enforcement and whether organised networks are operating by evading checks. The investigation is ongoing, with officials indicating that more details will emerge as questioning and technical analysis progress.EAGLE and Guntur police are jointly forming multiple teams for further investigation.
