HC seeks police response on alleged role in land dispute

Hyderabad: Questioning the authority of police to decide land title or grant possession, Telangana high court on Friday sought an explanation from Cyberabad police, particularly the station house officer of Shameerpet, over allegations of unlawful interference in a civil property dispute.Justice NV Shravan Kumar issued notices to the private parties accused of forcibly occupying the property and directed the police to file their response by the next hearing. The petitioner, Mendu Anil Kumar, stated that he purchased land in Thumkunta village in Shameerpet in 2018 and had been in continuous possession, paying property tax and electricity charges. He alleged that on Dec 9, one Venkat Reddy entered the property, evicted the watchman, and took over the premises. Kumar added that instead of acting on his complaint, police registered a case against him based on the trespasser’s version and advised him to approach a civil court to resolve the title. Anil Kumar argued that police had no power to adjudicate ownership and that their actions amounted to overreach, interference in civil court jurisdiction, and violation of his rights under Article 300-A of the Constitution.
