A large number of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) supported candidates for the posts of Sarpanches and Ward Members in the first phase of Gram Panchayat elections had won despite the attacks and atrocities of the ruling Congress party, party working president K.T. Rama Rao has said.
Congratulating all those who had won with the support of BRS, he said they had withstood the ‘excesses’ of the ruling party, including resorting to a few killings. Even Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s campaigning in the name of visits to districts had failed to push the ruling party beyond 44% of the contested seats, and it was a clear indication of people’s resentment against the government.
Though it was felt that the ruling party would have a natural advantage in the Gram Panchayat elections, the results have proved that the people are fed up with the Congress for its betrayal on all fronts. The first phase village election results have reiterated that it was the BRS that was an able alternative to the Congress, and there was no place for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the State.
He explained that the ruling party had secured adverse results after the people came to a conclusion that development of their villages was not possible for the next three years, though the Congress party would be in power till then. The Congress-backed candidates had won only with a majority of 10 to 20 votes at many places, and it was an indication of the ruling party’s slide.
Former minister and Suryapet MLA G. Jagadish Reddy’s father G. Ramachandra Reddy, was elected as the Sarpanch on Thursday at the age of 95 from their native Nagaram village in Arvapally mandal of Suryapet district. Mr. Ramachandra Reddy contested an election for the first time.
