Yamaha has filed a trademark for the ‘YZF-R2’ name in India, which suggests that the bikemaker could be working on a new 200cc bike to rival the KTM RC200. The Yamaha YZF-R2 could be powered by a 200cc, single-cylinder engine derived from the 155cc unit, which makes 18.1 BHP and 14.2 Nm. This figure is expected to rise thanks to the larger capacity. Currently, Yamaha does not have a direct competitor for the KTM RC200. The new model could slot in between the R15 and the more expensive R3. It is still unclear if the R15 will continue to be sold alongside the R2 or will face the axe. While there certainly is a market for a 200cc supersport in India, there has been no indication from Yamaha regarding any plans to enter this segment, except for the recent trademark filing.
