Acting on credible information, the Commissioner’s Task Force (North Zone), along with Market police, apprehended a man for allegedly manufacturing and selling adulterated ghee in the Second Bazar area of Secunderabad on Saturday (December 13).
The accused, Annamali Sainathan, 68, was taken into custody during a raid at his residence. Police said he was formerly running a tiffin centre near Monda Market and had turned to the illegal activity after discontinuing the business due to financial difficulties.
Investigators said that the accused was preparing spurious ghee at his residence by mixing plant based oils including coconut oil, palm oil and vegetable oil, along with food colours, and sold it as cow ghee. The product was packed in one litre poly packs and was supplied to local markets and pooja stores at ₹600 per kilogram, falsely claiming to be genuine.
Police seized around 200 kg adulterated ghee, a weighing machine, a packing machine, packing covers and a mobile phone, all valued at about ₹1.5 lakh. Officials said that the activity posed a risk to public health and amounted to cheating consumers for unlawful gain. Legal action is being initiated under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act.
