The new Tata Sierra has caught everyone’s attention in the last few months. Tata, which was launched in India last month, has recently opened bookings for its SUV, and has received over 70,000 confirmed orders even before the deliveries begin in January. But when all eyes will be on the most expensive model with all the features, what will one get if one goes for the base variant? Come on, let’s see.

Buyers will not have many exterior color options if they buy the base model. Customers can choose from colors like Pristine White, Pure Gray and Coorg Cloud. Unlike some other SUVs, the base model of the Sierra also gets a full-width light bar at the upper edge of the blacked-out grille and slim LED headlights. On the sides, the base model gets black finished steel wheels, although you get the flush sitting door handles only from the base model, and the C-pillar is blacked out to remind of the large rear side windows of the old Sierra.

At the rear, here too you get a complete LED taillamp setup with lightbar.

Inside, the base Sierra lacks luster. There is no infotainment system; A basic LED readout-style digital instrument cluster and the AC controls, shared with other Tata models, only offer basic adjustments for fan speed, heating and cooling.

You get gray fabric seat upholstery, with adjustable headrests for both front and rear outer passengers – there is no headrest for the middle passenger. For comfort at the rear, sunblinds are provided on the windows and rear AC vents on the center floor console, although surprisingly the base trim Sierra does not have seatback pockets.

A good thing is that there is a seat belt height adjustment facility for the front passenger and a three-point seat belt for the middle rear passenger.

As far as the features that are not visible in the pictures are concerned, Sierra gets all-wheel disc brakes, follow-me-home function in headlights, central locking with folding key, electronic parking brake, front 45W Type C USB charge port, tilt and telescopic adjustment for steering, 6 airbags, ESP, ABS, traction control and rear parking sensors.

Talking about engines, the base variant of Sierra comes with 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engines, both of which are available only with manual gearbox. Sierra Smart is priced at Rs.11.49 lakh for the petrol model and Rs.12.99 lakh for the diesel model.
