Bangladesh Protests LIVE Updates: Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Friday condemned mob violence by fringe elements, calling on citizens to resist violence, hatred and incitement at a critical moment of democratic transition. Stressing that the upcoming elections and referendum are a national commitment tied to the sacrifice of Sharif Osman Hadi, the government vowed justice for attacks on journalists and strongly denounced the lynching of a Hindu man in Mymensingh, asserting that there is no place for such violence in a “new Bangladesh.”

Protests erupt in Dhaka: Hadi was a critic of Hasina and opposed Indian views. He protested Hasina’s close ties with India and its leaders. Following his death, the Chattogram home of India’s Assistant High Commissioner to Bangladesh was attacked. Apart from that at least three instances of late-night arson were recorded in Dhaka — the offices of newspapers Prothom Alo and Daily Star and the home of former minister in the Hasina government, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, were set on fire.

Students join demonstrations: Several student organisations in Bangladesh also took to the streets across the capital, including protests at the Dhaka University campus. A student group, Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, organised a mourning procession within the campus and marched from Shahbagh to join the larger demonstration at the intersection. During the protest, members of Chhatra Shakti burned an effigy of Home Adviser and retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, demanding his immediate resignation over what they described as a failure to arrest those responsible for the attack on Hadi.
