Maruti Celerio & Ciaz Global NCAP Scores Explained – How Safe Are They?

Maruti Suzuki’s Celerio hatchback and Ciaz sedan were recently subjected to the Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) crash tests. The Maruti Celerio scored 18.04 points out of 34 in adult occupant protection, earning a 3-star rating, while its child occupant protection score stood at 18.57 points out of 49, also resulting in a 3-star rating. The hatchback’s two airbag-equipped variant was also tested by the authority, and managed to secure a 2 star rating for adult protection and 1 star for child occupant protection.

The variant subjected to the Global NCAP crash tests was equipped with 6 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD, Isofix mounts and three-point seat belts with reminders for all seats. The hatchback also complies with UN R127 pedestrian protection standards.

Meanwhile, the Maruti Ciaz received a 1-star rating for adult occupant protection, achieving 20.86 points out of 34 and scored 28.57 out of 49 points in child occupant protection, earning a 3-star safety rating. The tested variant was packed with safety features such as two airbags, electronic stability control, Isofix child seat anchors and seat belt reminders.

In the frontal crash test, the Celerio provided ‘Adequate’ protection for the driver’s head and ‘Good’ for the front passenger’s head. Protection for both the driver’s and passenger’s neck was rated as ‘Good’. However, chest protection was rated “Weak’ for the driver and ‘Adequate’ for the front passenger. The bodyshell and footwell area were rated as unstable and incapable of withstanding further load.

In the side impact crash test, the Maruti Celerio offered ‘Marginal’ protection for the head and chest, ‘Adequate’ protection for the abdomen and ‘Good’ protection for the pelvis. In the side pole test, the head and pelvis protection was rated as ‘Good’, while the chest and abdomen protection was assessed as ‘Marginal’.

In the child occupant protection test, the Maruti Celerio offered ‘Poor’ protection to the head, neck and chest of the 3-year-old dummy placed in a forward-facing child restraint system. The 18-month-old dummy, placed rearward facing position, also received ‘Poor’ ratings for head and chest protection. However, it offered full protection to the 18-month-old dummy in the side impact test. The 3-year-old dummy failed the head exposure.

Maruti Ciaz Global NCAP Results Explained

In the frontal offset deformable barrier test, the Maruti Ciaz scored 7.362 points out of 16, offering ‘Good’ protection to the driver’s head. Protection for the driver’s chest and thighs was rated as ‘Marginal’, and foot protection was assessed as ‘Poor’. For the front passenger, head and thigh protection was rated ‘Good’, while chest protection was assessed ‘Adequate’.

In the side movable deformable barrier test, the sedan offered ‘Weak’ protection for the driver’s chest area and scored 12.494 out of maximum 16 points. Similar to the Celerio, the Ciaz’s bodyshell and footwell area were rated as unstable and incapable of withstanding further loadings.

In the child occupant protection, the Maruti Ciaz failed to perform well overall. While it achieved a full dynamic score stood at 24 out of 24 points for both 18-month-old child dummy and the 3-year-old child dummy in the frontal and side impact tests, the child restrain installation and vehicle assessment scores stood at 4.57 out of 12 and 0 our of 13 points, respectively.
