At the time of Avinya’s global debut in 2022, Tata Motors had stated that the production version would be largely similar to the concept

One of India’s leading EV makers, Tata Motors, has plans to further strengthen its presence in this space. Towards that end, multiple new EVs are scheduled for launch in 2026 and beyond. One of these will be a sportback model based on the born-electric platform derived from Jaguar Land Rover’s new EMA (Electrified Modular Architecture). The Avinya range will be positioned as a luxury electric brand and will spawn multiple new SUVs as well. Let’s get more details on this story.

Tata Avinya sportback – What to expect?

Martin Uhlarik, Head of Global Design at Tata Motors, revealed that the first model in the Avinya range will be a sportback. It will be a 5-door EV with a dynamic and sporty low-slung profile. One can expect the overall design to be quite similar to that of the concept model. Martin also said that the design of the Avinya sportback model has been finalized. The EV will be launched in 2026. Further elaborating on the Avinya sportback, Martin said that the EV will work as a brand builder for the Avinya range. It’s like making a good first impression and then building on it with newer models.

While a sportback model is likely to cater to a niche segment of users, Tata seems confident about the sales volumes. The initial plan is to manufacture around 24,000 units per annum, which is pretty decent in a market where SUVs dominate. It will be interesting to see if Avinya sportback’s distinct design and overall value proposition makes it more appealing than SUVs in a similar price range.

Platform Sharing With Jaguar Land Rover

Avinya range of EVs from Tata will be underpinned by Jaguar Land Rover’s new EMA (Electrified Modular Architecture) born-electric platform, marking a major technology transfer within the Tata Group. The same platform will also be used by next-generation JLR models such as the Evoque and Discovery Sport, highlighting its global relevance and scalability. For India, Tata Motors is expected to localise the EMA architecture extensively, a move aimed at keeping costs competitive while still benefiting from JLR’s advanced electric vehicle know-how. This approach positions Avinya as a premium yet attainable electric offering, blending global EV engineering with local manufacturing efficiencies.

In addition to the sportback, the Avinya range will also include new SUVs. A total of five Avinya models are planned in the initial phase, which means one sportback and four new SUVs. One of the SUVs will be based on the Avinya X concept that was unveiled at the 2025 Bharat Expo. While the sportback will be a brand builder, this SUV will be a ‘brand pillar’. It will be more suited for the mainstream segment with its conventional SUV design. It will have a 7-seater version as well, which is likely to be the range-topping Avinya model.

Tata is also working on a smaller SUV based on the Avinya platform, which is expected to be around 4.4m long. A larger luxury UV measuring 4.9m is also under development. All cars in the Avinya range will be based on JLR’s EMA platform. This will make the Avinya range cars a strong contender for global markets as well.

With the Avinya range, Tata Motors will have more firepower to take on rivals. The brand currently leads in the EV segment with a market share of close to 40%. Tata recently achieved a major milestone of 2.5 lakh EV sales. In 2026, Tata will be launching the Sierra EV and the new Punch EV, in addition to the Avinya sportback. With a multitude of new products, Tata will be in a better position to handle the intensifying competition in the EV space.
