Patang… What’s it about?

Two childhood friends, poor Vishnu Krishna alias Whiskey (Vamsi Pujit) and rich Arun (Pranav Kaushik), are brought together by a kite (patang) and go on to share a close friendship for 12 years. Their inseparable bond faces a test when Aishwarya (Preethi Pagadala) enters their lives. Confused about her feelings, she ends up liking both of them, initially without either friend realizing it.

Eventually, Whiskey uncovers the truth, leading to a fallout between the friends. To settle the matter, they decide on a kite competition, the very symbol that united them in the first place, to determine who wins Aishwarya’s heart. What follows forms the crux of the film.

Patang Review and Analysis

“Patang” is essentially a triangular love story, but with a slight twist. Unlike routine love triangles where two men fall for the same woman, here the woman herself is torn between two friends. The idea of the heroine falling for one friend and then developing feelings for the other is somewhat novel, at least on the surface, if not entirely convincing in logic.

It also celebrates the Hyderabad lifestyle and offers a glimpse into the city’s kite festival culture, which is traditionally celebrated every year during the Sankranthi festival.

The core issue lies in the thinness of the plot. The story is stretched to a lengthy 2 hours and 40 minutes, which works against the film. For upcoming filmmakers, “Patang” serves as a reminder that when the story is simple, the runtime should ideally be crisp. As the duration increases, the flaws become more noticeable, despite intermittent entertainment.

At heart, “Patang” remains a routine rom-com built on familiar friendship-and-love tropes. Even with attempts to make it look trendy, the predictable nature never fully goes away. That said, some of the dialogues genuinely click and evoke laughter.

Considering the cast consists of newcomers, the performances are fairly settled. Vamsi Pujit impresses as the massy Whiskey, carrying the role with ease. Pranav Kaushik looks suave and fits well into the classy Arun character. Preethi Pagadala, as the confused Aishwarya, looks pleasant and tries to project a cute, old-school charm reminiscent of Swathi, though her performance remains limited in range.

The film’s biggest strength is its entertaining narration. The comedy writing stands out, and the climax is handled decently. Music is another plus, with all the songs sounding good, complemented by neat cinematography.

Director Praneeth Prathipati may be dealing with a routine narration, but the way he packages it with humour and lighthearted moments works to an extent.

Bottom Line: Overall, “Patang” has fun scenes that will appeal to youngsters. While the stretched narrative and familiar narrative dilute the impact, the film still offers decent entertainment through its comedy.
