Hyderabad: In an appeal to the public to ensure that the New Year is memorable, Hyderabad police commissioner VC Sajjanar announced plans for extensive enforcement against drunk driving at 100 locations across the city on Dec 31.“City police started drunk driving checks on Dec 24 in the run-up to Dec 31. Those caught driving under the influence of alcohol will face severe consequences. Whether you want to start the year with a bang by breaking the rules or face police action, the choice is yours,” he said.Police also announced that the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) had started monitoring drug peddlers to reduce drug smuggling.According to the police, 52,803 drivers caught drink-driving were given counselling this year. The total number of road accidents registered this year is 2,679, compared to 3,058 in 2024. A total of 7,808 minors were caught driving vehicles. After the cases were registered, charges were filed in 5,818 cases against the parents or vehicles.
