Six men sentenced to 20-year RI for 2016 abduction and gangrape attempt near RGIA

Six men were sentenced to undergo 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a court in Rangareddy district on Tuesday (December 30, 2025) in connection with the abduction and attempted gang rape of a young woman near the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in 2016. The court also ordered compensation of ₹3 lakh to be paid to the victim.

The convicts, Abdul Raheman (46), Mohd Abdul Kareem (50), Mohd Abdul Raheem (47), Syed Abdul Faheem (31), Mohd Imran (50) and Bandari Yadaiah (57), were arrested by the RGIA police within days of the incident and later tried in Sessions Case No. 478 of 2018. The XIII Additional District and Sessions Judge, LB Nagar, found all six guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including abduction, criminal confinement, attempt to commit gang rape, assault and criminal intimidation.

The case dates back to October 10, 2016, when the victim had gone to Shaheen Nagar with her friend to attend a Moharram event. While returning, the friend allegedly misled her near Aramghar and brought her to a waiting car, claiming her family members were inside. The victim was forcibly taken by five men to a farmhouse in Indira Nagar in Shamshabad, where she was threatened with a knife and subjected to an attempt to rape.

The woman managed to escape by running through thorny bushes and later approached the RGIA police, who registered a case the following day. Based on evidence collected during the investigation, the accused were arrested on October 13, 2016, and remanded to judicial custody. A chargesheet was subsequently filed after completion of the investigation.

During the trial, the prosecution examined witnesses and placed material evidence before the court and sentenced the five main accused to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for attempt to commit gang rape, along with additional sentences for abduction, criminal intimidation, causing hurt and wrongful confinement. The sixth accused was sentenced for his role in criminal confinement.
