India’s technology hub, Bengaluru, has now emerged as the country’s third most violent metro after Delhi and Mumbai, according to the latest Crime in India 2023 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
Despite Delhi and Mumbai recording the highest number of violent offences, Bengaluru has still witnessed the sharpest rise over the past three years.
Here’s what the 2023 data states about metros
Bengaluru: 3528 violent crimes
Delhi: 11,014 violent crimes
Mumbai: 4750 violent crimes
Hyderabad: 1483 violent crimes
Chennai: 973 violent crimes
Kolkata: 919 violent crimes
What all are considered violent crimes?
According to the NCRB, violent crime counts as murder, rape, kidnapping and abduction, attempt to murder, robbery, dacoity, arson, and riots. These are also called “heinous crimes”.
Delhi and Mumbai have shown a slight decline in violent crimes, reported for three years; Bengaluru has recorded a 47 per cent surge in violent crimes between 2021 and 2023.
Breakdown of violent crimes in Bengaluru
Murder cases: 219
However, the number of murder cases in Bengaluru remains lower than in Delhi and Mumbai, as they reported 500 and 300, respectively. However, it is higher than Chennai and Hyderabad, which reported 132 and 148, respectively.
Rape cases: 277
Delhi reported 1210 rape cases, much higher than Bengaluru’s cases. However, it is more than Chennai and Hyderabad, which saw 98 and 164 cases, respectively.
Kidnapping and abduction: 1089
Delhi, on the contrary, reported 5600 cases, a sharp hike compared to Bengaluru. However, Chennai saw 498 cases and Hyderabad reported 713.
Robberies: 1123
Delhi recorded 2917 cases, while other metros were far behind Bengaluru.
The neighbouring metro cities have seen a contrasting trajectory, as Chennai has cut its violent crime cases by one-third in three years, while Hyderabad recorded a modest increase.
