Nissan India currently has two products in its portfolio – the Magnite subcompact SUV and the X-Trail three-row SUV. Recently, the carmaker introduced the Magnite facelift with subtle design changes and feature upgrades. Frank Torres, Divisional Vice President of AMIEO Regions & President – Nissan India Operations, revealed that the company will introduce two midsize SUVs (a 5-seater and a 7-seater) and a mass-market electric SUV as part of its mid-term global business strategy. All these new models will arrive by the end of 2026.
Frank also confirmed that the upcoming Nissan EV will be an “affordable” model. The company is also exploring hybrid and CNG technologies for the Indian market. Aiming to improve its brand image and showcase its advanced Japanese technologies, Nissan will also introduce some of its global models in India via the CBU (Completely Built Units) route. The company is already offering the Nissan X-Trail as a CBU unit.
In addition to expanding its product portfolio, Nissan aims to export the Magnite from India to 65 countries, up from the current 20 markets. The carmaker announced an investment of USD 600 million (Rs 5,300 crore) with Renault for developing six new models (three for each brand). Furthermore, it made an investment of USD 100 million to expand the Magnite’s export operations from India. The Japanese automaker aims to boost its sales in both domestic and export markets to around 1 lakh units each by 2026.
Talking about Nissan’s upcoming midsize SUVs, both models will be based on the new-gen Renault Duster and Duster 7-seater. The latter will be based on the Dacia Bigster SUV concept, which is set to make its global debut in its production-ready version at the 2024 Paris Motor Show. Nissan’s versions of the new Duster and the Duster 7-seater will feature a different design language and additional features. However, both the new Duster and its Nissan counterpart will be based on the same heavily localized CMF-B platform and are reported to come with 1.0L HR10, 1.3L HR13 turbo petrol, and 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine options.
