Indian Express In an interview, Anurag said, “My films are shown in film festivals all over the world and people from every corner of the world like them, but the irony is that my films are not liked that much by the Hindi speaking audience.”

Anurag also told the reason for this.

He said, “Actually, a blueprint of the Hindi film industry is already made. It is controlled to a great extent by trade, box office and star system.”

“Never worked with any star except Ranbir”

The director didn’t stop there. He further said, “In my career spanning three decades, I have never worked with A-list stars. ‘Bombay Velvet’ was the only film of mine whose hero Ranbir Kapoor and it turned out to be a big flop at the box office.”

“Tamil producers have given many hits without any stars, whereas in Malayalam film industry there is no heavy promotion. There are direct films releases,” he added.

Anurag’s film was removed due to ‘Ek Tha Tiger’

Anurag further said, “Today people talk so much about my film ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’. It was removed from the theaters after 9 days, because Salman’s big film ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ was about to release. It was the decision of the theatres, not the producer.

Anurag said, “That film of mine had earned Rs 26 crore in 9 days. If it had got a place in theatres, it would have earned even more. We don’t have enough theaters here.”

Avoided going to Hollywood

Anurag said Hollywood “I was born here and my stories will be in Hindi, so I run away from Hollywood because everything is different there, even the culture. The way I can tell my stories here Well, I can’t tell anywhere.”

Anurag made many great films like ‘Black Friday’, ‘Dev D’, ‘Gulal’ and ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’. However, he got real recognition from the gangster drama film ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’.
