Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor Company are the top two car manufacturers in India, and they are fierce rivals in the market. While Maruti Suzuki has retained the top spot with high sales numbers, Hyundai has secured the second position with a strong product lineup. Both companies have been focusing on the growing SUV segment in recent times.

Maruti Suzuki’s strategy in the SUV space has included the launch of several new models, such as the new-generation Brezza, the Fronx compact crossover, and the Jimny lifestyle off-roader. These models have collectively contributed to Maruti Suzuki’s success in the SUV segment, with total sales of 41,658 units in August 2023. This includes 14,572 units of the Brezza, 12,164 units of the Fronx, 11,818 units of the Grand Vitara, and 3,104 units of the Jimny.

Hyundai Motor India, on the other hand, sold a total of 34,030 units in August 2023. The breakdown of sales includes 13,832 units of the Creta, 10,948 units of the Venue, 7,430 units of the Exter, 1,493 units of the Alcazar, 236 units of the Tucson, and 91 units of the Kona EV. While Hyundai has a strong product lineup in the SUV segment, it trailed behind Maruti Suzuki in total SUV sales by a margin of 7,628 units.

Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza continues to be India’s top-selling SUV, followed by the Tata Punch and the Hyundai Creta. The Tata Punch recorded sales of 14,523 units in August 2023, marking a 21 percent year-on-year growth compared to the same month last year.

Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki has plans to introduce the next-generation Swift hatchback and Dzire compact sedan in the near future, with both models expected to undergo comprehensive changes in design, features, and engine technology. These models are rumored to incorporate Toyota’s strong hybrid technology to become some of India’s most fuel-efficient cars. Additionally, Maruti Suzuki intends to enter the electric vehicle (EV) segment with an SUV in 2025.

Hyundai’s upcoming plans include the launch of an updated i20, followed by a Creta facelift in early 2024. The company also has intentions to introduce an electric version of the Creta SUV in 2025, indicating its commitment to the EV segment.
