Celebrated each year on September 8, World Physiotherapy Day holds immense significance in recognising the crucial role of physiotherapy in healthcare. This global observance not only celebrates the contributions of physiotherapists, but also promotes awareness about the benefits of physiotherapy in improving the quality of life for countless individuals worldwide.

The history of the day can be traced back to 1996 when the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) declared September 8 as an annual day to commemorate the formation of WCPT in 1951.

So, on this special occasion, let’s delve into the world of physiotherapy — what it entails, its myriad benefits and if at all it has any limitations.

What is physiotherapy?

According to Christopher Pedra, consultant, sports and exercise medicine, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbaiphysiotherapy, also known as physical therapyis a healthcare profession that focuses on optimising physical function, mobility, and well-being. It employs a holistic approach to treatment, using a combination of manual therapy, exercise, education, and other techniques to help individuals recover from injuries, manage chronic conditions, and prevent further physical impairments.

The importance of physiotherapy lies in its ability to address a wide range of health issues. “It plays a critical role in rehabilitation of patients recovering from injuries or surgeries, offers non-invasive methods for pain relief, helps manage symptoms and improves quality of life for patients with chronic diseases such as arthritis, diabetes and heart disease,” Pedra said.

One would think physiotherapy only helps manage ailments once they have occurred, however, this is not true. “Physiotherapy is essential for preventive care as physiotherapists help individuals prevent injuries and maintain a healthy lifestyle through exercise and education. Additionally, athletes and individuals look to improve their physical performance by physiotherapy to optimise their strength and flexibility,” he said.

Who can benefit from physiotherapy?

The scope of physiotherapy is vast, and it can benefit people of all ages and backgrounds. Some groups that can benefit from physiotherapy, according to the expert are:

*Individuals with orthopaedic conditions: Those with joint, muscle, or bone concerns, such as back pain, fractures, or arthritiscan find relief through physiotherapy.

*Neurological patients: People suffering from neurological disorders like stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or multiple sclerosis can improve their mobility and function with physiotherapy.

*Geriatric patients: Physiotherapy helps seniors maintain their independence, reduce falls, and manage age-related conditions like osteoporosis.

*Paediatric patients: Children with developmental delays, cerebral palsy, or sports injuries can benefit from physiotherapy to reach their full potential.

*Athletes: Physiotherapists assist athletes in recovering from injuries, preventing future injuries, and enhancing performance.

*Pre- and postnatal women: Physiotherapy can help women prepare for childbirth and recover postpartum by addressing issues like pelvic pain and urinary incontinence.

However, despite the numerous benefits of physiotherapy, it does have limitations.

“Physiotherapy may not be the sole solution for certain conditions, and it often works best as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Moreover, for physiotherapy to be effective, patients must include exercises and lifestyle changes,” Pedra noted.

Additionally, the expert said that in some cases, such as severe acute injuries or surgical procedures, physiotherapy may need to be delayed or adapted.

“The success of physiotherapy can vary from person to person, depending on factors like the nature of the condition and the patient’s commitment to treatment,” he concluded.
