Gary Neville reacts after what he’s seen happening at Chelsea behind the scenes

Gary Neville has suggested that Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley could be in big trouble.

Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are currently overseeing recruitment at Chelsea, but Neville thinks there is going to have to be some changes at Stamford Bridge with the club’s recent transfer business yet to yield much success.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcastthe former Manchester United defender said: “I think there’ll be some changes there. I don’t think they’ll change the manager at all, but I think there’ll be some changes there in how they go about their business and who does their business in the next 12 months or so. I can’t see it lasting that in terms of how it’s being run. It’s madness.”

Chelsea were heavy spenders again in the last transfer window, bringing in the likes of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia for big money.

It comes after an extremely active January, where players such as Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk were brought to the club.

Despite all of these new additions, the Blues currently sit 14th in the Premier League table.

Do Chelsea need to change their transfer strategy?

Yes. We are at a point now where they have to stop thinking about bringing in several young players for the future and focus on signing one or two proven footballers who can make an impact now.

At the start of the month, The Telegraph claimed that Chelsea refused to buy anyone over the age of 25 during the summer, which meant someone like James Maddison could not be considered as an option.

The attacking midfielder is now killing at their London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, recording six goal contributions in as many games in the top flight this term.

Stewart and Winstanley cannot be blamed for everything, but with the duo being the club’s sporting directors, of course questions are going to be asked of them if their recruits continue to struggle.
