Maruti Suzuki has started exports of its much-loved off-roader, the Jimny 5-door to several international markets including Latin America, Middle East, and Africa. India is the only country that manufacturers the 5-door version of the off-roader for domestic as well as the global markets.
Unveiled at Auto Expo 2023, the Maruti Jimny 5-door is currently on sale in the domestic market. In November 2020, Maruti Suzuki started production of the 3-door Jimny exclusively for exports to areas including Latin America and Africa. Maruti Suzuki had launched the Jimny 5-door in the Indian market in June 2023.
Based on the rugged ladder-frame chassis, the Maruti Jimny 5-door is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that produces 103bhp and 138Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic.
Maruti Suzuki is aiming to develop one lakh units of the SUV per year. Close to 66 percent of the total production for the domestic market and the rest for exports. MSIL is currently selling close to 3,000 units of the Jimny per month. The SUV is sold through ARENA dealership network. If reports are to be believed, the 5-door Suzuki Jimny will be showcased at the Japan Mobility Show on October 26, 2023.
The 5-door Maruti Jimny won’t be introduced in the European markets due to stricter emissions norms. The current 1.5L K15B engine won’t be compliant with the emissions regulations. This engine is not available with a mild hybrid tech.
Suzuki has recently launched the made-in-India Jimny in the South African marketwhich looks largely identical to the India-spec model. The African model gets a new colour options that’s not available in our market. It has a new green paint scheme, which looks similar to the colour offered on the Indian Army’s vehicles.
