Amid uptick in flu cases, Coimbatore administration asks people to mask up, eat high protein food | Chennai News

In wake of a marginal surge in fever cases across the district, the Coimbatore administration Tuesday issued a set of precautionary measures for the people to avoid getting infected by flu.

District collector Kranthi Kumar Pati has issued a statement and said due to the northeast monsoon, there has been a surge in the flu cases across the district. He added that the flu is affecting children and elderly people more and asked people to follow the safety guidelines, including wearing masks at crowded places, drinking boiled water, washing hands frequently with soap, eating food with high protein content, etc among others.

Pati added, “Fever, body pain, headache and cold are some of the symptoms of the virus and generally, the fever remissions in seven days and those with comorbidities need to take medicines in consultation with a doctor.

He also said, “The government is taking data of those who are admitted at government and private hospitals and conducting fever camps in their areas and guiding people to hospitals if required.”

Speaking to indianexpress.comDr P Aruna, the deputy director of health services, Coimbatore, said since October, they have been involved in conducting health camps. He added special fever camps are also being conducted on Saturdays as per the directions of the state health department.

“We have provided guidelines to the private hospitals as well. Initially, there were about 20-30 cases per day and now it has increased to 50 cases,” she said.

The official added that there are around 12 blocks in the district and fever camps are being held at three to four blocks each day.

“The situation is not alarming and it hasn’t reached an epidemic stage. Usually, during monsoon, the number of flu cases rise. Preventive measures are issued to ensure that the virus doesn’t spread further and provide awareness to the people so that the vulnerable groups, such as young infants and elderly people, can be safeguarded,” she said.
