No Buyers For the Manjummel Boys OTT?

It is strange to find out that there are no buyers for the recent Malayalam blockbuster film, Manjummel Boys. It’s not because the film wasn’t a hit; it’s due to the exorbitant price the producer is quoting to OTTs, as per buzz.

The small Malayalam film, Manjummel Boys, created a sensation in the trade not only in India but also in the US. It has become the first Malayalam film to gross $1 million, a feat that big stars like Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Dulquer couldn’t achieve.

However, the OTT landscape has changed, not just for the Telugu industry, but it’s a serious crisis across industries.

OTTs spent huge amounts during COVID to acquire movies, but now they realize that the views they get on the majority of the films are not worth the high prices they paid.

So, streaming platforms have slashed their prices, which has become a life-threatening blow for production houses. These days, it’s impossible for a producer to survive without selling their film to an OTT before release because once the film is out, if the talk is flop or average, there are no buyers for it.

We know several films, including those with known heroes, getting rejected by OTTs recently. Now, the Malayalam industry is facing the same crisis, but in a bigger way.

As many as 40+ movies are lying without OTT offers while their lobbyists are making rounds of OTT offices to convince them to buy their movies.

In the case of Manjummel Boys, the buzz is that OTTs are willing to pay up to 10 crores, but the producer is demanding 20 crores, which streaming platforms are rejecting.

This is a huge concern; if a massive blockbuster is getting rejected, it hints at an official correction in the prices they paid before.
