Declan Caddell: Former Crusaders midfielder to succeed Stephen Baxter as manager

Declan Caddell celebrates scoring for Crusaders in the Irish Cup semi-final win over Dungannon Swifts last year

Former Crusaders midfielder Declan Caddell will replace Stephen Baxter as manager at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old was appointed head of Crusaders Football Academy two years ago.

Caddell joined the Crues at 15 years of age and won three Premiership titles along with four Irish Cup successes during a decorated career with the north Belfast club.

Baxter is stepping down after 19 years in the post.

The longest serving manager in world football announced he was leaving Seaview in February.

Caddell, who retired after helping Crusaders to Irish Cup glory last year, also won the League Cup and three County Antrim Shield medals as a player under Baxter.

“Crusaders are delighted to confirm that Declan Caddell will take over as manager after Stephen Baxter steps down,” the club said on Tuesday evening

“Caddell, who joined Crusaders 21 years ago as a 15-year-old, came through the club’s youth system and was a key player during Stephen Baxter’s amazing era at the club.

“Declan was appointed as Head of Crusaders Football Academy in June 2022, implementing a youth review setting up the club’s full-time post-16 academy and has been an integral part of the club’s staffing structure since his retirement.

“At the minute, we are fully focused behind Stephen and the team to finish the season on a high.”

Crusaders currently sit fourth in the league table as they bid to secure European football at the end of the season.
