2018 Tata Tiago: Driving impressions from Fiat Linea owner

As my Linea visited garage a couple of times in this timespan, Tiago became the primary mode of transport.

BHPian abhi_tjet recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

My parents chose to drive down to Pune from Raipur instead of travelling via train, thanks to the Samruddhi expressway.

I accordingly got an opportunity to use our July 2018 Tiago for office duties and a few highway trips. As my Linea visited the garage a couple of times in this timespan, Tiago became the primary mode of transport.

I drove Tiago to visit Thane, Triyambakeshwar and a few other places along with regular Hinjewadi traffic, and below is my opinion on city/highway usage in no particular order:

  • Ride quality is plush – thanks to the 14-inch tyres and a pleasant surprise after Linea. However, the same benefit turns into a bane on the highway due to relatively softer suspension. Handling is decent with Tiago keeping its composure on twisty roads.
  • With a full load of 4 people and a ghat incline, AMT takes a bit of time to accelerate. The hesitation in switching from 2nd to 1st further accentuates this.
  • My comfortable speed in Tiago is definitely around 80-90. Weak breaks and lack of engine breaking don’t inspire confidence after that.
  • Sport mode is nice and it’s a zippy little car (ZICA anyone..)
  • As echoed by many others, this gearbox works best when you aren’t in a hurry and using part throttle.
  • A/C is a chiller(I miss ACC which was made available on later variants) and the music system is definitely a USP.
  • Dashboard rattles to glory on the slightest road imperfections.
  • Wiper/light stalks are of good quality and twin-pod consoles look rich and classy.
  • The car is closing in on 34k and will cross 35k once it reaches its base location.
  • Gearbox definitely helps you relax in high-traffic situations but is not good enough for quickly closing gaps. In any drive mode, it takes a bit of time and then lunges forward which results in coming too close to the vehicle ahead and one needs to break, typical AMT curse, I suppose.
  • It still looks chic and upmarket with a beautiful dashboard design and an upmarket looking central console.
