Hyderabad’s Emerald Mithai goes to rust!

For years in Hyderabad, there have been a handful of legacy sweet shops that have a loyal fan following amongst people. Dadu’s, Pulla Reddy, Almond House and Emerald are usually the preferred option due to how long they have been around, their range of delicious-yet-reliable confections and their overall brand value.

But recently, Emerald Mithai Shop in the lower tank bund region fell in trouble with the food inspectors when the establishment failed to meet its required safety requirements.

GHMC food inspectors pulled a surprise raid on the sweet shop’s kitchen premises recently and were shocked to find a deeply unhygienic and stinky kitchen, with rats roaming around.

Apart from that, the inspectors also found expired milk, paneer and other dairy products in their fridge. The sweet shop was also found to be using way too many food colourings in their sweets. The inspectors have seized the expired products, and will be taking them to a lab to get them check.

This raid is a rude shock to many Hyderabadis who have trusted Emerald Mithai Shop for its quality and legacy. This raid is also a larger part of the surprise raids GHMC has been conducting under the direction of IAS officer RV Karnan.

More than 130 restaurants and bars have been raided over the last couple of months. Many nefarious and unethical practices of these restaurants came to light in this period, with the public being able to have a better understanding of what goes into the food they eat outside their homes.

These raids have not only been leading to a better informed public, but they are also forcing restaurants to take accountability and conduct their business with due diligence.
