Nabanna Abhiyan Live, Kolkata doctor rape-murder case: Students of the Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj are marching towards the state secretariat “Nabanna” from Kolkata’s College Square this afternoon. The Kolkata police which called the march “illegal” are using water cannons and tear gas shells on the protesters who are resorting to breaking barricades and throwing stones at the policemen deployed along the route. The BJP which is said to be backing the student body has claimed that police lathi charge has led to several protesters being injured. The ‘March to Nabanna’ seeks the resignation of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in light of the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor at R G Kar Hospital.

What happened to four students ahead of the march? Ahead of the march, BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari on X claimed that four “student activists who were arriving at the Horah railway station went missing after midnight”. Terming the BJP’s claims as “false narrative”, the West Bengal police this morning issued a statement that the said four persons have been arrested for allegedly “planning to orchestrate large-scale violence during the Nabanna Abhijan today, and involved in a conspiracy of murder and attempted murder”.

What’s the status of the investigation? After a purported video showed several people thronging the crime scene soon after the victim’s body was found on the morning of August 9, Opposition leader Bengal alleged destruction of evidence in the rape and murder case. But the Kolkata police have rejected these claims. The CBI has named Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in the FIR on the the alleged financial irregularities at the institution during his tenure. The polygraph test on the prime accused Sanjay Roy, the results of which are still awaited, is said to be crucial to determine if it was a gang rape or the act of a single perpetrator.
