This initiative aligns with HYDRA’s original mandate of protecting water bodies and public spaces from encroachment. A file seeking to grant HYDRA these powers under the Revenue and Prevention of Encroachments Act has moved through the necessary channels, with the Law Department expressing no objections to the transfer of authority from Collectors to HYDRA.

The file is now with Minister Ponguleti Srinivasareddy, and it is expected to reach CM Revanth Reddy in the next couple of days for final approval. Once signed, HYDRA will gain authority over several key departments, including revenue, GHMC, HMDA, water drainage, panchayat raj, and roads and buildings.

This expansion of HYDRA’s jurisdiction will enable it to issue notices and take swift legal action against illegal encroachments that previously required intervention from Collectors, RDOs, or Tehsildars.

Additionally, the police department has assigned 15 inspectors and 8 SIs to HYDRA on deputation, ensuring it has the necessary enforcement power to carry out its mission. This step is expected to accelerate ongoing demolition drives and strengthen protection efforts for the city’s water bodies and public spaces.
