Hyderabad: AM Green, part of the Hyderabad-based Greenko Group, on Wednesday said it placed what is touted as India’s largest electrolyser order with John Cockerill Hydrogen for 1.3 GW of advanced pressurised alkaline electrolysers for its 1-million tonne green ammonia facility at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh.
The 1.3 GW of electrolysers will be supplied in two phases of 640 MW each for the production of green hydrogen and its subsequent conversion into green ammonia. The Kakinada green ammonia plant is scheduled to start production in the second half of 2026. Electrolysers are used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen and are critical for producing low-emission hydrogen from renewable or nuclear electricity.
As part of this agreement, John Cockerill and AM Green will also be developing India’s largest electrolyser manufacturing plant with a 2 GW per year capacity in Kakinada, contributing to the country’s green hydrogen production target under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, AM Green said.
The plant will supply the second phase of 640 MW of electrolysers to AM Green’s Kakinada project.
AM Green is eyeing a 5 MTPA of green ammonia capacity by 2030, which will be equivalent to approximately 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, accounting for one-fifth of India’s target for green hydrogen production under the National Green Hydrogen Mission and 10 percent of Europe’s target for green hydrogen imports. The Kakinada facility has already been certified by CertifHy as compliant with EU RFNBO requirements for green ammonia, including additionality and renewable energy timeliness. AM Green has already executed offtake agreements for this project with major players for intended end use in a range of green hydrogen applications.
