Telangana will get more houses than its allocated share in the Central government’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), said Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar.
“The Central government has set a target to construct 1 crore houses across the country this year. We are ready to allocate more houses to Telangana than its share,” Mr. Khattar said.
He made this announcement at a public meeting in Karimnagar on Friday after launching a host of development works under the Smart City Mission (SCM) in the district headquarters town.
He inaugurated a 24×7 drinking water supply project at the Housing Board Colony in Karimnagar, marking the launch of round-the-clock tap water supply to around 2,660 houses in five divisions of the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation (KMC). Karimnagar is second among the cities under the SCM after Manimajra in Chandigarh to have 24×7 drinking water facility in the country, KMC sources said.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Telangana Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, Karimnagar MLA G Kamalakar shared the dais.
Mr Khattar responded positively to an appeal by Telangana Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy for allocation of 8% share in houses under the PMAY to Telangana.
Mr Reddy pointed out that Telangana received a meagre 0.7% share in the PMAY during the previous BRS rule.
Stating that around 81.60 lakh applications were received for Indiramma Indlu (houses), including 65 lakh in urban areas in the State so far, he urged the Union Minister to allocate its due share of houses to Telangana to meet the housing requirements of all.
Mr Sanjay and Mr Prabhakar drew Mr Khattar’s attention to the pressing issue of the dump yard at the bypass road posing health hazards to the residents of nearly 10 divisions in KMC limits.
Mr Khattar assured to extend technical and financial support from the Central government for waste processing and resolving the issue to ensure a clean and sustainable environment. He lauded Mr Sanjay for taking keen initiative to improve infrastructure, civic amenities and quality of life in Karimnagar under the SCM.
He said the Centre improved road and rail connectivity and infrastructure facilities in Telangana by allocating substantial funds in the last 10 years, besides reviving the Ramagundam Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited (RFCL).
Earlier, the Union Minister inaugurated various Smart City development works, including a smart digital classroom at Kumarwadi Government High School in Karimnagar.
Collector Pamela Satpathy and other officials were present.
