Hyderabad: Osmania General Hospital, one of Hyderabad’s oldest healthcare institutions, is set to undergo a major transformation with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art building in Goshamahal. The upcoming facility will offer a wide range of advanced services and expanded departments, including a significant addition: Robotic surgeries.
If successful, Osmania will become the first state-run hospital to provide this cutting-edge medical technology, surpassing institutions like NIMS, which operates as a semi-autonomous body.
Health minister C Damodar Raja Narasimha has been overseeing progress, organising review meetings to finalise the designs for the new hospital, which will span 26.3 acres with a built-up area of 3.2 million square feet and feature 2,000 beds. The new Osmania will not only expand the hospital’s existing 22 departments but introduce eight additional ones, including specialised units for geriatric care, palliative care, and rheumatology.
A key focus of the new facility is enhancing accessibility and convenience for patients. The current Osmania faces challenges like overcrowded casualty wards, which will be addressed in the new design by expanding the emergency room to 90 beds. Operating theatres will increase from 13 to 20, and the intensive care units will be expanded. A new transplantation department, equipped for kidney, liver, and skin transplants, will also be part of the new setup.
The hospital will be equipped with a massive parking structure to accommodate patients and visitors. Two basement floors will be dedicated to parking, making Osmania one of the hospitals with the largest parking systems in the country. Additionally, spacious waiting halls and sufficient OP counters will be provided to handle 3,000 to 5,000 patients daily, ensuring a smooth flow and reducing long wait times.
For future healthcare professionals, the new Osmania will introduce nursing, dental, and physiotherapy colleges, with hostels for students being built on-site. A large auditorium with 750 seats will also be available for educational and public events.
With these comprehensive upgrades, the new Osmania General Hospital will not only be a medical hub but also a symbol of progress in public healthcare, offering world-class services to the people of Hyderabad.
