Vijayawada: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking an independent probe monitored by the apex court into the Jan 8 stampede incident in Tirupati, and suggested the petitioner approach the high court.
Six people, who were waiting in queue lines to collect Vaikunta Ekadasi darshan tokens, died in the stampede. The state govt has constituted a judicial commission to probe the issue.
BCY Party president B Ramachandra Yadav moved the Supreme Court with multiple prayers. Besides seeking directions to dissolve the existing TTD trust board and constitute a new board, he prayed for increasing the compensation given to the families of the deceased.
The petitioner’s counsel also sought the intervention of the apex court into the stampede issue and said it was the failure of the trust board in making proper arrangements that led to the stampede. However, the Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, declined to entertain the petition and said the petitioner could approach the high court.
Without making any observations on any of the issues raised in the petition, the bench dismissed the petition.
