The potential of Rourkela Airport in Odisha is set for a significant up-gradation, as both the state and Central governments collaborate to upgrade its infrastructure. The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Majhi, has highlighted the airport’s vital role in his recent visit to the city, emphasising plans for its upgrade.
A key initiative involves securing a 4C licence for the airport, which will allow aircraft to land safely at night, a feature expected to boost connectivity and economic prospects. The Odisha government has also sent a proposal to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in this regard.
In a letter to AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar, Principal Secretary to Commerce and Transport Department Usha Padhee said the government of Odisha has proposed to upgrade the Rourkela airport of SAIL suitable for 4C CAT 1 IFR operation considering the growth of the city.
Padhee has also urged the AAI to design a master plan and conduct an OLS survey based on the proposed master plan. The proposed master plan envisages expansion of the runway to 2700 metres in length and 45 metres in width with Doppler very high-frequency omni range (DVOR) and CAT 1 ILS for operation of big body aircraft like Airbus 320/B737 during day and night.
Meanwhile, former member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly for Rourkela, Dilip Ray, has announced his intention to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss these plans further.
“The discussions will encompass all relevant aspects of the airport’s expansion and broader infrastructural issues,” Ray stated.
Local MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) for Raghunathpali, Durga Tanti, has also reaffirmed his commitment by ensuring ongoing dialogue with the state government.
Tanti remarked, “I have been in constant communication with the authorities to expedite these improvements.”
