A six-year-old boy, who was trapped in a lift shaft in a residential building at Masab Tank, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a city hospital on Saturday.

The victim, identified as Arnav Kumar, was a resident of Mangalhat. On Friday, he accompanied his grandfather, Vijay Kumar, to visit his aunt in Shantinagar. As they reached the apartment building, Arnav stepped into the lift first and pressed the button for the third floor, where his aunt lives.

“However, the before the grill door could close, the lift started moving up, leaving his grandfather outside. In a desperate attempt to stop the lift and pull Arnav back, his grandfather tried to intervene. Panicked, Arnav attempted to jump down but slipped through the gap between the lift door and the floor, and was stuck ,” Nampally Inspector M Appala Naidu said.

A rescue operation was launched by the Disaster Response Force and Fire Department in which they cut through the lift frame and floor slab using gas cutters. After two-and-a-half hours, officials managed to rescue the boy and rushed him to Niloufer Hospital. His body was crushed, with multiple internal and external injuries, and he died while undergoing treatment, informed police officials.

According to the official, the lift, nearly 20 years old, was poorly maintained, which led to the accident.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
