Vijayawada: Heavy rains in the early hours of Friday brought much-needed respite to the residents of the city, who had been struggling under the scorching heat for the past few days.
According to the rainfall data on the AP State Development Planning Society (APSDPS) website, Vijayawada north mandal received the highest cumulative rainfall of 58.7 mm, followed by Ibrahimpatnam (49.25 mm), Vijayawada central (46.3 mm), and western mandals (39.0 mm) from 8:30 am on Thursday to 8:30 am on Friday.
The rain that started pouring around 1am, intensified and continued to lash parts of the city and the suburbs, with varying intensities, till 4:30 am on Friday, thus inundating the low-lying areas.
In fact, the city witnessed a sudden change in weather from Thursday afternoon, with light to moderate rainfall for a short duration in some parts. The temperature dropped further after the heavy rains in the early hours of Friday.
Rainwater stagnation was witnessed in several low-lying areas including Vijayawada city bus station, low bridge area near the railway station, Benz Circle, NTR Circle, Auto Nagar and Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road. Meanwhile, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) authorities deployed water suction machines to remove stagnant rainwater from the roads. Moreover, municipal workers were assigned to clear trees that were uprooted due to heavy downpour, from the city roads.
