Now, it appears that Google has spilled the beans regarding the launch of the first Android XR headset.

Google’s annual developer conference is happening next month. It was revealed in February that Google I/O 2025 will be a two-day event that starts on May 20. As the event is coming closer, Google has revealed the list of sessions that will be held during the event, and it mentions Android XR for Technical Session 22.

A dedicate webpage for this session mentions that Google will discuss how to develop immersive apps for XR devices (like Project Moohan). Developers can use Jetpack SceneCore and ARCore for Jetpack XR to make differentiated apps for XR headsets. Google will release Android XR Developer SDK during the event.

The company mentioned on the same page that Android XR’s public launch will happen later this year. That is probably when the first Android XR headset will launch. It was revealed in the past that Samsung will be the first brand to launch an Android XR-powered XR headset. So, we can expect Samsung’s XR headset to launch before the end of this year.

A few months ago, YouTuber MKBHD got early access to Samsung’s Project Moohan prototype. He revealed several details about the headset, including its metal front frame, high refresh rate Micro OLED screens, external power supply via a battery pack, dozens of sensors and cameras, and the Android XR UI.

The Gemini AI assistant will play a central role in Android XR and help users in getting things done. All Android apps will work on the headset, but optimized apps will have an immersive design. People can control and navigate around the UI using their fingers and other hand gestures.
