Hyderabad: At least 20 thatched huts were damaged when a fire broke out at Kuntloor in Hayathnagar on the city outskirts on Saturday. No casualties were reported in the fire which is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit and subsequent LPG leakage.
According to the police, the incident occurred when the one of the huts caught fire due to the gas leakage. Alerted by this, residents in the huts adjacent to it rushed out of the houses to safety. Nearly 10 LPG cylinders caught fire and the blasts created a panic situation in the vicinity.
Within minutes, the fire spread to other huts in the neighbourhood. Locals in the nearby residential area noticed the fire and thick smoke emanating from the huts and alerted the fire department and the police.
The police and the fire personnel rushed to the spot and it took six fire engines and personnel from both fire and police department to douse the fire in three hours.
Officials said straw and plastic material in the huts could have led to the thick smoke apart from the unpleasant odour in the surroundings.
The total worth of the damaged property is yet to be estimated.
A complaint was yet to be lodged. The Hayathnagar police are investigating.
