Overnight rains lash Telangana; authorities on high alert in flood-prone areas

Hyderabad: Several districts in Telangana experienced heavy to extremely heavy rainfall since Tuesday night, flooding streams, lakes, and roads and prompting traffic diversions and emergency measures.Mulugu district bore the brunt, with officials placing the District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) on alert. Collector P Shabareesh urged the public to avoid venturing out, especially across bridges and highways with flowing floodwaters. Fishermen were advised to stay ashore.Bejjur in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district received ‘extremely heavy rainfall’, recording 219.5 mm between 8:30 am and 6 pm, while Venkatapuram in Mulugu followed closely with 214.5 mm during the same period. ‘Very heavy rainfall’ was recorded in Mangapet, Mulugu, which received 119.5 mm. Several other locations across Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Karimnagar, and Kumuram Bheem districts recorded ‘heavy rainfall’ ranging from 65 mm to 106 mm.In Venkatapuram mandal of Mulugu, Raalla Vaagu overflowed, washing away a temporary road and disrupting traffic. Mulugu collector Divakar TS inspected the site and warned that Godavari water levels may rise in the coming days. People in vulnerable low-lying areas have been asked to prepare for relocation, and amenities are being readied at rehabilitation centres. Residents in old, unsafe houses were also urged to move to safer places. A rescue boat team has been stationed at Eturunagaram.At Malluru village in Mangapet mandal of Warangal district, Athacheruvu stream overflowed, flooding 20 houses. Affected families were shifted to a nearby relief centre, and officials acted to prevent further inflow into homes.In Sangareddy, officials monitored the Singur project, while Bhadradri Kothagudem Irrigation Officer B Arjun stated that current inflows into the Godavari were not alarming. He noted that the river had caused widespread flooding in 2022 due to Polavaram backwaters. As of Wednesday, the Godavari level at Bhadrachalam was at 18.8 feet, well below the first warning level of 43 feet.District police urged people not to visit lakes and streams amid continuing rain forecasts.
