The Klyuchesvskoy volcano, the most active and tallest in Eurasia, erupted late Wednesday following the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked Russia’s remote Kamchatka Peninsula and even triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific.
Russian state news agency RIA reported that lava began flowing down the volcano, which is the largest active volcano in the northern hemisphere. The Klyuchesvskoy is located in the Kamchatka Peninsula and is 4,750 mts tall and it last erupted in 2023.
The lava flowed down the west side of the volcano, according to Newsweek. The scientists at Kamchatka noticed the crater was filling with lava and the volcano was emitting ash plumes. Kamchatka is called the “land of fire and ice” because it has nearly 300 volcanoes which erupt often. Of these, 29 are active.
